Our new series Show, Tell and Talk held its first workshop on developing a sense of belonging with 1st year students. It was great to meet in person to listen and share current projects. Dr. Steve Bullock (Associate Professor in Aerospace Engineering) presentation focused on how he has transferred his skills in aero flight path planning to help design student paths that work for diverse students. Angela Parry-Lowther’s (Senior Lecturer in the School of Management) talk provided a fantastic insight into how her background as a track athlete and work in industry has informed her use of student reflection to support her first years to identify their challenges, break down factors into identifiable areas and help empower them. Many more ideas were shared from the audience, giving all who attended a range of examples and ideas to take away and consider.
New Opportunities
Education for Sustainable Development Network Launch
This is a network for academics and PG teaching staff to connect and share ideas, content and best practice on sustainability education across the university. There are monthly networking events called “SustainabiliTEAs”, with some themed discussions or presentations and time for informal connections.
SustainabiliTEA – Conceptualising and Teaching Sustainability
Wednesday 16 November 2022, 1pm – 2.30pm. Bill Brown Design Suit.
Claire Gronow, lecturer in Water and Environmental Management (Civil Engineering), will lead a discussion on two critical aspects of teaching for sustainability. Firstly, ontological aspects, that is, how we, as teachers, are conceptualising and explaining sustainability. Secondly, Claire will present a draft typology for classifying the various aspects of sustainability that we are teaching about for input and reflection. There will also be a 10 minute update form Professor Chris Preist on Education for Sustainable Development across the university.
Show, Tell and Talk: Community building and student belonging
Wednesday 23rd November 2022, 1pm – 2.30pm. Online.
This online workshop, open to all staff and students, will explore how we can design online curricular and extra-curricular activities and sessions which build students sense of well-being and belonging.
Show, Tell and Talk: Graduate skills development
22nd February 2023, 12pm – 1.30pm. Online.
The Bristol Skills Framework has been in place since 2015. A lot has happened since then! In this workshop we will look at the work we are doing to refresh the Bristol Skills Framework so that it will help our students develop the skills to thrive in a changing, challenging and dynamic world.
