Helping students to prepare for online exams (shared from the Education Bulletin).

Some students will be undertaking online exams this summer. The first time students experience online formats should not be in the exam itself.   Even prior experience of for example submitting a word-processed assignment in Blackboard may not be enough if the exam requires additional work such as scanning handwritten material, so students should have an opportunity to practice the same process as will be required in their exam and have a means, ideally in class time, to ask any questions they may have as a result.

Ways to help students prepare in advance for online exams include:

  • For centrally supported exams practice spaces are made available in Blackboard approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of the assessment period so encourage students to use these
  • Use formats which will be used in the exam (e.g. Blackboard tests or scanning handwritten work to upload) for formative assessments or mock exams
  • Refer students to relevant study skills resources e.g. on online open book exams

Promote the DEO guidance on preparing and submitting work.
