BILT Briefing: Issue 66

Meet the 2021/22 Student Fellows

Our new Student Fellows have now joined the team! This year we are looking at five themes and each of the Student Fellows has introduced themselves via our blog. Meet:

  • Carlos Shanka Boissy Diaz, working on Embedding Sustainable Development in the Curriculum
  • Ellen Graves, working on Blended Learning and Online Community
  • Tasha Suresh, working on Students as Researchers and Co-creators (Tasha will be working on this project with another Student Fellow, who will be joining us in a couple of weeks)
  • Adriel Miles, working on Decolonising the Curriculum
  • Kai Charles, working on Experiences of Disabled Students

You can email the Student Fellows at bilt-student-fellows@bristol.ac.uk

We have one final ‘Meet the BILT Associates’ blog this week – Alicia Gonzalez-Buelga. View all the introductory blogs from our BILT Community on this page.

Decolonsing the Curriculum reading group

Our first meeting of the University of Bristol ‘Decolonising the Curriculum’ reading group is taking place on 10th November between 12.30 – 1.30pm. We’ve had to limit numbers to 30 so booking is essential! Book your ticket here (the link to the reading will be sent when your ticket is confirmed).

The reading group is open to staff and students.

Postgraduate Research Supervisor Symposium

We are pleased to invite you to the Postgraduate Research Supervisor Symposium 2021, which is open to all staff currently engaged in postgraduate research supervision at the University of Bristol, and to those who would like to supervise in the future.

You can see full details about this event and book your ticket by visiting this page.

Case Studies – Authentic Learning

This week our case studies ‘spotlight’ is on authentic learning. Authentic learning is when a learning environment or task mimics a working example, creating an ‘authentic’ experience for students and creating connection between curricula and potential careers. You can see examples from Engineering, Chemistry, Marketing and Archaeology in the Spotlight section of our case study page this week.

New blogs available

We’ve published a short piece on ‘Four Quick Wins for Hybrid Teaching’ and BILT’s Aisling Tierney has blogged about ‘Unusual and unexpected routes to academic skills development’.

Read them both on our blog.

Sustainability month starts next week

2021 is a big year for Sustainability! COP26, The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, is going to be held in Glasgow in November. To align with this, The Bristol SU Sustainability Network is hosting its Sustainability Month from 23 October – 20 November instead of its usual February slot.

Their aim is to promote awareness and act on environmental, social, and economic sustainability through the collaboration of student groups and societies, staff, academics, and external organisations. We will expect a highly active month with events such as:

  • A Youth MockCOP26, by the Model United Nations Society (BrisMUN)
  • A delegation of 46 students visiting COP26 in Glasgow
  • People’s Assembly, an event for University Senior Team and students to shape future University and SU direction

More information here.

The Student Research megathread continues…

The last two weeks have seen two more subjects added to our Student Research Journal megathread – English and Biosciences (Biomedicine and Biochemistry). You can see these (and all the others we’ve posted so far!) on this Twitter thread.
