The Decolonising and Diversifying Curricula in Life Sciences Team is a cross Faculty team, many congratulations to all involved in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience & Psychological Science.
…the faculty working group [was set up] to share best practice and produce a resource booklet for staff, as few resources were available looking at decolonising and diversifying Life Sciences subjects. These leaders have engaged student curriculum developers to review units from across the UG programmes in the Faculty of Life Sciences. This work is central to our Faculty EDI strategy which has been refreshed this year alongside the University’s own strategy refresh.
Caroline McKinnon, Bronwen Burton and Zafar Bashir, the EDI Leads for Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, respectively, and Ann Pullen, Faculty Education Director, prepared and delivered a presentation on “Equality and Inequalities in Science” to all the second year students in the biomedical sciences schools. Students were invited to engage with resources to identify their own implicit biases. The presentation was certainly favourably received by students at the SSLC for the Biomedical Research, Employability and Enterprise Skills unit, and similar sessions will be made available for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Faculty.
