Call for Contributions Guidance
‘The compassionate conference’ – transforming learning through pedagogies of care.
The Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching (BILT) annual conference will take place online, on Tuesday 28th June 2022.
The deadline for contribution submissions is Monday 14th March, 9am.
Conference overview:
Hopeful, affective, and compassionate approaches to learning, teaching and assessment offer opportunities for transformational educational experiences for our students and for ourselves (Freire 1992; hooks 2003; Patience 2008; Gilbert et al 2017). These approaches place relationship building and care for others at the centre and highlight the role of teachers in recognising and addressing institutional and classroom practices that disadvantage students (Hao 2011). Thus, these approaches seek to benefit all but critically recognise the importance of compassionate pedagogies for those whose experiences and voices are already marginalised by common teaching, learning and assessment methods in Higher Education. Perhaps more than ever before, the pandemic has foregrounded the value of relationships, the importance of wellbeing, and has highlighted a range of challenges for many of our staff and students.
The conference will explore how in difficult times we can take hopeful and compassionate approaches to teaching and assessment for transformational learning, both in person and on-line.
Conference themes:
We invite staff to contribute to conference sessions in the following theme areas:
- Teaching that cares and challenges
- Compassionate assessment and feedback
- Nurturing student agency in learning
- Caring for future generations – engaging students with sustainable futures
- Fostering integrity and honesty in assessment
- Staff wellbeing
Workshop format:
Sessions are scheduled to be 1-hour long and will include 10-minute presentations from each contributor. We aim to engage a wide range of presenters from across different disciplinary areas and with differing perspectives on each of the conference themes. The session will close with a short Q&A involving all presenters.
Presenters are welcome to engage participants in interactive activities e.g. polls, Mentimeters or through Chat and can make use of use audio/visual resources e.g. PPT presentations or video footage. Such resources will need to be managed within the allotted presentation time.
Selecting contributions criteria:
Proposals will be reviewed by a small shortlisting panel made up of members from the Senior Team and BILT Leadership Team. Proposals will be assessed according to the following criteria:
