Nina Snaith

Reader, Faculty of Science, School of Mathematics

“Thanks to her, I’ve worked with various mathematicians in my research community, which has given me the confidence to pursue an academic career”

“Her deep knowledge means that she always knows which reference I need, and which tools I should learn next.”

“Nina is the best supervisor anyone could ask for. She is always approachable, no matter how small the problem and perfectly strikes the balance between supporting students at their low points and pushing them to develop as researchers at their high points.”

“…encouraging not just my academic pursuits but also my teaching interests, a healthy work life balance and to develop my other interests outside of academia.”

We asked Nina how she felt about being nominated and shortlisted – I am honoured but also embarrassed at being nominated for this award because being a caring supervisor just seems so natural. I love working with all students – personal tutees, students in my lectures, graduate students – but of course I get to know the graduate students best by working closely with them on their projects for years. We work quite closely, meeting regularly and puzzling over problems together. The group I have right now – they call themselves the Snaith Squad! – are lovely. They help each other and they help me, so the benefit is definitely mutual. I am touched that they have thought to nominate me for this award.
